Honoring Marine Tattoos

Honoring Marine Tattoos

Dear Sgt. Grit-

My son, LCpl Jordan C. Haerter of Sag Harbor, New York, a proud member of 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, The Walking Dead, was killed in action on 22 April, 2008 He was guarding an entry control point at Ramadi, Iraq along side of Cpl Jonathan T. Yale of 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines who also perished. Jordan and Jonathan were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for Extraordinary Heroism for their actions at a beautiful ceremony fittingly held at the awesome, National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA.

Many of Jordan’s Marine brothers and his girlfriend have sent me photos of their tattoos that they have had done to honor Jordan. These are lifetime remembrances that they proudly wear and I love them for that.

Marines are a true brotherhood Semper Fidelis!

My Hero My Son Tattoo

Proud Dad

Dear SGT. Grit,

My son Jeffrey went to boot camp last August.(2008) He left just before his 18th birthday, and to be honest I had hoped that he would go to college and play baseball, but he chose the Marine Corps, and what a great decision that was. To pass the time away, and to make me feel closer to him I started to read everything I could on the Marine Corps. I started reading about Paris Island and the training that these young men and women go through to become Marines. Unless you have lived it you will never know the sacrifice and hardships these people go through, so that they can protect us. I always knew the Marines where the best, but I never really knew how good they where until I started my reading. Some of the stories of what past Marines have done just blew me away. One thing that I didn't realize is what a close nit organization the Marines are. As I look back on graduation day, it makes me happy to know that I didn't loose a son to the Corps, but I gained thousands of Marine step-sons and daughters. I thank everyone that has server or is serving now, you, people are true heroes. I am including a picture of my tattoo in hopes that you will post it with the others.

Thank you,
Tom Woodings

EGA with Cross Swords Tattoo

EGA with Cross Swords Tattoo Greeting Marines,

I am currently serving as a Sheriff Deputy in Dona Ana County, New Mexico U.S.A. It has been two years and six months since I've been away from my beloved Marine Corps. After discussing with some of my fellow deputies who are also Marines, we all found out from each other that we still do things like, fresh high and tights each week, tuck your boot laces into the boot when they are off your feet, we hang our uniforms in a military manner, boots spit shined everyday, and many other things. The point is, the Corps hasn't left us it still governs the way we go about our daily lives. That is why I finally went through with getting my first Marine Corps tattoo. I don't know if you can post the artists name, but if you can his name is Moises. This young artist resides in my home town of Las Cruces.

Thank you in advance if you do post my tattoo, and Thank you either way just providing this web page for us to look back on great times.

I have been looking to get another Marine Corps tattoo for quite sometime but had a hard time finding anything that I liked. I got USMC tattooed on my right calf 4 years ago but wanted something different and somewhat unique. I finally found it about a month ago, thanks to your online catalog. I got the idea from one of the T-shirts that is in your catalog (I also bought the T-shirt). Here is the final product that is on the inside of my left bicep. I'm also including the T-shirt design from your catalog.

Sgt. Grit,

After reading your last newsletter and viewing the tattoo montage I thought I'd forward a photo of mine. It is in memory of my eldest brother. He was more like a father to me even though we were only separated in age by eleven years.

The squadron logo is wrong, it should read VMFA-232, but it's the one his widow sent me. Too late to change the Tat.

My first Marine Corps Tattoo

I finally got my first Tattoo after 30 yrs,,I retired from the Marine Corps in Sept of 1999,and in the same Month in the year 1979,I was a young PFC,in Jacksonville,N.C.and I was on Court St getting ready to get my first Marine Corps Tattoo, but I decided not to,because my arms were quite skinny back then,I was a skinny, boney 17 yr old kid from The Bronx,,Several of my buddies got their tattoos that night so I decided to wait,,Well the time finally came 30 yrs later, while I was on Vacation in San Jose,Costa Rica, where I also happened to have been a Marine Security Guard at the American Embassy,in the Early 80's,,I'm so glad I finally got it !!!I have attached a Picture.

Marine Bulldog Tattoo

Tattoo of Marine Bulldog carrying a mail bag

A quick story of my own.

I served our Corps from 1987 - 1991 and I too was stationed with Headquarters, 11th Marines. I had many thoughts of getting back to Las Pulgas over the years, it never seemed to work out. Last year my wife surprised me on our 10th Anniversary with a trip to California. We took one full day and spent it on the base. I had never seen combat, I had surgery two weeks before the Gulf War started so I couldn't go over with the 11th Marines, going back was like a flashback. It was like I had never left. Sure some things had changed, but for the most part, CamPen was still the same. We visited my old barracks room, office, and many other places that I had spent some of the best days of my life. It was a great trip and my wife, who had never fully understood what I would try to describe to her about the Corps, was fully impressed with every Marine that we met and talked to.

When we returned from our trip, she surprised me with another great gift. A gift certificate to get the Marine tatoo that I had always wanted. She had taken a photo of a painting that someone had done on the Post Office wall at Las Pulgas. It was of a Marine Bulldog carrying a mail bag. It actually looks like the Xmas shirt that you have on your web site. Since I've worked for the Post Office for the last 15 years we thought it fit just right. I've attached a photo of my tatoo.

Keep up the good work!

These great tattoos we given to me by Bluebird Tattoo in Portage, Indiana - an award winning shop. Their awards are mostly in original and large and unique tats. Since I design my own or copied them from book I had written in from my time in service, I had only a couple designed by my artist.

These tats are there so I never forget how proud I am in being in the Corps, I spent so much time in combat areas and was never severely hurt and so I never forgot how futile war is because so many are killed and messed up for life mentally and physically and their family's are also changed forever and what have we ever gained from all the destruction but sleepless nights and horrible dreams plus I broke the 5th Commandment of God many times over and actually had a rush killing unsuspecting people as a sniper which I will have to pay for in the afterlife.

I only hope I live long enough to do enough good to be forgiven for following orders at time I thought were the killing of innocent people. The only Heroes were the ones who didn't come back because they gave their live for their country and their friends and would go directly to Heaven because of their heroism. I wish I was one of the Lucky Ones!

The first one is self explanatory, the second one, my father in Law liked the one I had so he got his first one, and it's Vietnam, looks really good, the third one is related to my reason for discharge, got tired of the docs asking me where it hurt. I have a few more to include and EGA on my forearm.

My Son's tat

My son wanted to be a Marine from the time he was 7 years old. He went to pool events at our local recruiter’s office for 4 years before he was old enough to join. We signed the paperwork for Delayed Entry the day he was eligible. He left for boot 3 weeks after HS graduation. He became a Marine on 9-7-07 (legally anyway—he was ALWAYS one at heart). His room has been decorated with US and Marine flags, Marine figures, USMC Wallpaper etc. as long as I can remember. He read the story of the battle of Thermopylae when he was quite young and was always inspired by Dionysius’ reply when Xerxes told the Spartans to lay down their weapons and surrender. “MOLON LABE” which means “Come and Take Them” . After boot and MCT, my soon-to-be Cpl had the words permanently inscribed on his arms. With Greek lettering. I have attached a picture.

My son is now in Iraq..wishing he was in Afghanistan “where the action is”.

Sgt Grit,

I was in the MARINE CORPS from 1975-1979 and never got a tattoo. When I stated to get your catalog a few years ago your T-SHIRT,"Fear Is Not An Option", motivated me to get a tattoo. The picture of the bull dog on that T-SHIRT in you catalog was the model for my tattoo. To this day I'm motivated by it.SEMPER FI.
