Marine Corps Tattoos

My son graduated from Parris Island on September 14, 2007. Before he left to boot camp, he wanted a tattoo, but when we talked about it and I told him as a birthday gift I would get him his tattoo after boot camp. While he was in boot camp I wrote him and told him that I would like to get one too as a celebration for his accomplishment. So we decided to get them together. We couldn't get them together on the same day as there wasn't enough room, but we did go with each other days apart to get them.

USMC Tattoo

Hey Devil Dogs! I would like for you to add this tattoo to your Scuttlebutt pages of USMC tattoos!

My husband, Sergeant Tim Capehart, and I got married on May 19, 2007, and he got activated on June 1, 2007. He will be leaving for Iraq at the end of September, 2007, and I am heartbroken, but proud. I love my husband with all of my heart, and althought I will miss him more than words can express, I am so proud of him. He is fulfilling a commitment to the country that he loves, something that so few are willing to do. He is a Combat Engineer with Alpha Company, 4th CEB out of Cross Lanes, WV and will be deploying with 3/23 out of New Orelans. This is my husband's secound tour of duty with his Corps, and I have been here holding down the homefront while he is gone. I got this tattoo in support of him. I want the whole world to know just how proud of my husband I am. I showed it to a friend of ours who is a Gunny, and he teared up and told me that he wished everyone knew just how important the wives, girlfriends, etc are to the men that are overseas. He told me that we are the backbone of the deployed Marines. I completely agree. A lot of people focus on the guys, and rightly so, but they often overlook the wives that are left behind...it's hard for us too! I pray every day for my husband, along with every other Marine that is serving to protect my freedom. To all Marines past, present and future, thank you for your service. I owe you all a debt that I could never repay.

Moto Tat

Sgt Grit:

My name's Sgt Rodriguez from Headquarters Battalion Marine Corps Base Hawaii as the S-3 Training NCO. I wanted a moto tat but I didn't want the traditional USMC or SEMPER FI(DELIS) so I had a buddy of mine draw up a variation of the tattoo I have now. The original he came up with didn't have equal ink on both sides so I had the artist from 808 Tattoo tweak it and this is the masterpiece that developed. If I do pick up rank if I re-enlist, I left room for promotion under.

Sgt Grit,
Like many, it took a while to find a Corps tattoo I would be happy with. Being a fan of your site, I found the perfect image. This was not my first, and will not be my last tattoo. Next, a high explosive 155mm round will go nicely on the tricep!

Girlfriend of a Marine

Hey Sgt!
I've been receiving your letters since my boyfriend got out of basic training. We've been dating for a little over two years now and he's the love of my life! His brother and a very close friend of his are both in the army (you should hear the arguements!) His brother is possibly working on a second tour in iraq, and his friend is due back from there in September. Adam would like to serve for us over there as well... He's been in the brotherhood since August of last year. He actually left the same week as his 20th Birthday. While in Basic I sent him photos to keep him updated, a birthday card (which I think he got in trouble for!), and I had 2 Veterans from the Marines talking me through his training and telling me their own stories. When he came home from MCT his sister and him got tattoos. Ironically enough, Saddam Hussane was hung that night! Anyways this past Monday, after coming home from Twentynine Palms, Ca, he flew to Okinawa where he'll be stationed for two years. Both our families and I support him very much. After he's out of the service and I'm done with schooling we plan to get married. Wish us luck! By the way, I love your store and I'll probably still be buying from you guys long after he gets out.

A very Proud Girl,
Chelsea

Jarhead Tattoos

Figured i would finally get around to sending in my tats now that i got a good camera. The chest tat is my favorite and deffinately has to be a one of a kind. was going to get the out line of P.I. but then thought when I think of the phrase "there's no place like home" I think of the red shoes in the wizard of oz and thus the Yellow Footprints came to mind. My friends do not understand the footprints at all. On the barbwire one I have my platoon number from P.I. "1111" and the Marine b-day but hacd to add "Tun Tavern" above it as again with people they asked is that your b-day, and I tell them in a way yes it is. The other one has "Semper Fi" below it with "84" and above it had "Jarhead" put on (my NH license plate says Jarhead too).

My name is Shannon H. I am from Pensacola Fl. I got my tattoo a few months ago it is on the top of my right foot. Yeah it hurt some but as they say Pain is temp, Pride is forever, and Pain is weakness leaving the body. I am very proud of my tattoo, I got it in honor of my heart my hero my best friend who is currently serving in the USMC, and in memory of my Marine friend that I lost Oct 23, 2005 in Iraq. I am not military but my uncles both were and I have a huge respect and appreciation for what all the men and women of the military do and stand for. I wanted to join the Marines but unfortunately a car accident has kept me from being able to join but I live my life like the men and women of the Marine Corps with HONOR, COURAGE, and COMMITTMENT!! Roses and Dog Tags Tattoo

I have this awesome tattoo that I would love to share. I however am not in the Marine Corps….just a very proud wife!

I support my husband 200% in his choice of being a Marine. He has been in for 14 years this July and I’m still proud of him and love the lifestyle and the life we have made together!

Anyways, this is my tattoo….it is his dogs tags to support him. One has his dog tag information and the other one has the same information as the other, only I changed out the SSN on the one and put in our wedding date. The Red Roses are the Marine Corps spouses flower…so the circles around my ankles and falls down the front….to show that no matter what we are always one…..and the cross is to show our faith in our marriage and god!

I hope you add it to the growing display of other tattoos!

Thanks so much and tattoo pic from a Marine mom

Hi,

I wanted to say thank you so much for all the effort everyone at St. Grit's puts into honoring our Marine Corps. As a Marine mother it means so very much to me that the men that put their lives on the line for us willingly every day are given our thanks however we can give them. I also want to thank everyone who sends in stories and thanks for you to publish. Many of them have touched my heart.

As the mother of a LCpl with the 3/7 who is currently serving his second tour in Iraq I wanted to share a picture of my tattoo with you. I got it when he returned safely from his first tour in Ramadi. I am truly proud of my son and all of the 3/7, many who have become like sons to me. They and the rest of our Marines are in my prayers daily. Thank YOU and Semper Fidelis!

Semper Birthday Tattoo

Sgt. Grit,

Allow me to submit a photo of my first tattoo...

Many can imagine my pride as a parent when my 17 year old asked me to sign the papers to enter him into DEP. I did so without a moment's hesitation, and have never regretted doing so. His senior year was a bit of a struggle, but soon after graduation, he got his paperwork in order and he was ready for boot camp. Those last hugs were tough, as a single mom seeing her only son go off to get his butt kicked, I knew he was entering the opportunity of a lifetime.

Those 13 weeks seemed to take forever, every day my 5 year old daughter would check the mail box for something with the Marine logo--a letter from her beloved Bubba! I began to see the change in his letters, the discipline, the respect, the pride. Sure enough, the tears flowed as I was able to spot my leaner, taller now 18 year old, as his platoon rounded that corner during the Moto Run that Thursday morning in San Diego.

I watched him attempt to relate to his buddies when he was home on leave/RA: they were still the same, but he had changed. His recruiter was killed in an auto accident during his RA, and it affected him deeply. Just before he left for his MOS school, he and I had some strong words with one another, and 8 months passed before we were able to make amends. It was then I discovered the true bond that a mother can have with her grown son. For him to acknowledge my struggles to raise him and his sister; to hear him praise me as his rock; to hear him say that he was who he was because of me simply humbles me.

Now, I'm pretty square sometimes. I work two simple retail jobs. I graduated from a small-town high school 8 months pregnant with him at the age of 17 and pretty uncertain of my future. A short marriage brought Maddie, his sister, into the picture, and I depended on him quite a bit to help pick up the slack. You couldn't have asked for a more devoted big brother --"Mom, guess what we did at the Poole function yesterday? Sergeant Parks let me sit on all the recruits shoulders and made them do push-ups! Then he let me count the number of times they ran up and down the bleachers! Up and down, I got tired of counting, so they went back to push-ups."

When the time came for him to be deployed, Maddie and I flew to see him in February of this year. Oh, sure, we had to go to Hawaii where he was stationed at K-bay, but I'd have gone anywhere to put my arms around him, hug him, tell him how proud I am of him. I am not for or against the war, I am for my son. This is the path he has chosen, and it's his job--I'd support him if he chose to flip burgers or sell used cars. I don't read the newspaper about the events in Iraq, I don't watch the news about how many casualties there were today. I go out of my way to shake the hand and make eye contact with every service member I find, and thank them for their service and making it possible for my son to serve. I have discovered that his paternal grandfather was a Rough Rider, and I'm learning about my grandfather's tours abroad. I read Sgt. Grit, I buy everything I can afford...T-shirts, bumper stickers, mother's flag pins...daring people to ask me about my son. I've found some of the most amazing strengths come from everyday people, veterans of every walk of life tell me their touching stories, and I am moved to tears each time.

As a young person, I'm ashamed to say that we weren't taught much in school about the wars, or maybe it didn't interest me in particular. I knew that my grandfathers fought, but they never spoke about it. But to observe the brotherhood of these veterans, to see the bond that Tyler has with men who were once strangers, to read the stories of all your readers about the pride--the honor--to serve is so very moving.

After Tyler was deployed, I threw out the idea of a significant tattoo, and boy, was he shocked! If he can endure boot camp, I can sit for some ink, right? He and I began researching, and through e-mails and snail mail came up with this design. When Tyler came back from boot camp, I helped him pay for his first tattoo, so it seemed only fitting that I went to "Tattoo Tom" to ask about one for myself. Tom, a vet himself, remembered Tyler and his ambition and pride in becoming a Marine. I explained the drawing to Tom, how the orchid plant is my family: my parents, the large leaves upstanding; the roots, my grandparents, our foundation; my two brothers are the smaller leaves for added strength; the stem is my life--frail in appearance, but strong and sturdy; the large orchid represents me, straightforward; Tyler is the nearly full-grown blossom, not in my shadow but nearly on his own, looking toward the heavens and his father; and after a few years and a bit of stem, little Maddie. The words, in Latin, mean "continuously strong, always bound together." And of course their birth dates. The placement? Over my heart of course. While I was there, the newspaper came in to do an article on the bond between 4 men who call themselves 'the Four Horsemen', and the matching patriotic tattoos Tom had done 10 years ago on each of them. The article ran in the local paper on Sunday, I think I was still feeling the pangs of envy for the bond those four shared. I stayed long after my tattoo was done, drawn to thier courage, and left with phone numbers, tight hugs and the promise to help him upon his return.

Tyler said this was the best birthday ever. He honored his strong bond with his sister by hanging up the 8 foot banner that she and her friends at daycare made "Happy Birthday, Bubba" over his bed. Yeah, I bet he takes some heat over that moniker....talk about defending your little sister's honor!

With pride and honor,
Melanie Gertson--just the mom,

Skull and Sword Tattoo

Well I had to wait until I retired, turned 63 years old, and one of my 24 year old twins went to boot camp to get my tattoo. I served 4 ˝ years active from 1962 to 1966. Thirteen months 2nd Marine Division then 41 months at MAG 31 / MAG 32. My service time helped me retire with 30 years of service in Ohio Public Employees Retirement System. Of coarse now I do what I want, when I want. Madtown Ink in Madison, Ohio did the work.
